In the Jose Padilla Case what criminal charges were brought against Padilla?
What were the criminal charges brought against Padilla, and did they include a charge regarding the planned detonation of a “dirty bomb”?

- Conspiracy to murder, kidnap, and maim persons in a foreign country.
- Conspiracy to provide material support for terrorists
- Material support for terrorists
There's no real crime here. The prosecutor was unable to get enough evidence of an attempt. But conspiracy requires pretty much nothing as evidence. And that was presented to the court, nothing. The presiding judge said that the prosecutors were "light on facts" about the conspiracy charges.
Nevertheless, Padilla was found guilty of all charges.
Of course nobody likes Padilla. So, it doesn't seem to be a big deal. But what about the damage done to the Constitution and the justice system?

Padilla was never charged in relation to the alleged plot to detonate a radioactive bomb. He was arrested at Chicago's O'hare airport in May, 2002, and held in military detention for more than three years. He was eventually indicted on charges of conspiricy to "murder, kidnap and maim" people overseas which avoided a Supreme Court battle over how long the U.S. may hold one of its citizens without charge.
The case was transferred from military to civilian jusisdiction in 2006 and it went to trial in May, 2007. See the link below for a complete and thorough reporting on his case.
