In the near future what may be of value to theorists of visual culture will be the visual programming languages and databases which utilize fuzzy logic to retrieve files for users who have only a vague visual memory of the image they wish to retrieve. This will prompt new research into cognitive and associative patterns, and this in turn will lead to new semiotic analyses of visual forms and their connotations.

Given the present speed of change, many universities struggle to keep pace and to envisage the impact new technology will have on the future lives of their graduates. They are slow, therefore, to incorporate sufficient discussion of technology-related issues in the curriculum. At the conceptual level, more thought needs to be given to processes and implications. Furthermore, in general , they are not equipping all students with the skills necessary to operate machines and software. Degree programmes and modules in such subjects as interactive multimedia are rare. Exceptions to the above criticisms include : The Center for Art and Media Technologies at Karlsruhe, The Center for Electronic Arts at Middlesex University, and The Center for Inquiry in the Interactive Arts, Gwent College of Higher Education.
