SEVERAL ways to solve:

----------------------------------------

write both fractions with the same denominator 6

1/3 = 2/6

find the fraction half way between

2/6 and 5/6

the answer would be 3.5/6 which can be re written as 7/12

--------------------------------------

We could have chosen 12 as the denominator

1/3 = 4/12

5/6 = 10/12

what is halfway between 4/12 and 10/12

---------------------------------------------

we could have calculated the value of their sum and divided by 2

Average = (1/3 + 5/6 )/2

= (2/6 + 5/6)/2

= (7/6)/2

• convert the fraction 1/3 the base 6 by multiplying 2 to the nominator and denominator.

2/6

Add 2/6 and 5/6 then divide them by 2

hence (2/6 + 5/6)/2 = 7/12 is the fraction half way between 1/3 and 5/6

• Start by making the denominators the same

1/3 = 4/12

5/6 = 10/12

10/12 - 4/12 = 6/12

one half of 6/12 is 3/12

4/12 + 3/12 = 10/12 - 3/12

7/12 = 7/12

So if I move up from 4/12 a distance of 3/12 I will be at 7/12.

And if I move down from 10/12 a distance of 3/12 I will be at 7/12.

So half way between 1/3 and 5/6 is 7/12.

or you can take [4/12 + 10/12] / 2 = 7/12

• got to start with a common playing field so use a common denominator:

1/3 = 2/6

now restate the question, what is halfway between 2/6 and

5/6?

well what is halfway between 2 and 5? that would be

5-2 =3 and cut that in half, 1.5, so it would be 1.5 units up from 2 or 3.5. so that would be 3.5/6 but noone in their right mind write a fraction like that you must get rid of the decimal. .5 is 1/2 als known as half, so you can multiply by 2/2 (that's just multiplying by 1, again no change,) and you get

7/12 (3.5*2/6*2)

• Find their average!

[1/3 + 5/6]/2 = 7/12

• I would say 3/6 which is really 1/2
