On December 21, 2006 the US military raided the Iranian consulate in irak (kurdistan) and detained a group of Iranian officials including foreign affair officials .
The Iranian officials were in Iraq at the invitation of Iraq's president, Jalal Talibani, as part of an agreement to improve security between the two countries. It is not clear why they were detained, as no official record or cite is available.
