To remember our history and our roots, not to get too uppity.

There's an old saying about forgetting one's history and being doomed to repeat it. Same thing.

The poem called the "Recessional", questioned British invincibility at the time. It hinted that some day the Empire might fall. Let us not forget. After the Great War, the War to end all Wars was fought by the world from 1914 to 1918 (US part of 1917-1918) Many allied nations adopted the term ``Lest we forget``, as a reminder that we should not forget those who died in WW1, and subsequent wars. Let us not forget our fallen warriors. During the seige of the Legations in China during the Boxer Rebellion, someone painted ``Lest we forget`` outside the walls, this time probably to say ``Don`t forget us``

It's from a poem Rudyard Kipling wrote for the Queen of England around the turn of the century (1900's), having to do with British patriotism:

    Far-called, our navys melt away,

On dune and headland sinks the fire.

Lo, all our pomp of yesterday,

Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!

Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,

Lest we forget -- Lest we forget!

    In case we forget.

Like 'Lest we forget the suitcases, let's tie a string around your finger'

means 'In case we forget the suitcases, etc.'

    It definitely doesn't mean unless.

I'm a French native, and I often use "lest" to express "for fear that", "in case that"....

Also, "lest we forget" as a whole expression means "‘In memoriam".
