To answer the question whether or not it is our duty to engage in charity, we must first define what duty is. However, since the conception of duty varies across cultures and times, to arrive to a generally-agreed definition of what duty should be composed of, and thus the answer to the question, is virtually impossible.

However, the meaning of the word charity is generally understood as giving help to those in need out of love and kindness, but not out of necessity or obligation, and without wanting anything in return. Firstly, considering charity our duty means that it is necessary and is our obligation to give help to others in need, regardless of whether we are compassionate or callous. Secondly, denoting charity as duty, would means that we are requiring something in return for charity. In the original sense of the word, duties cannot exist without rights. Duties can only be defined as duties, if corresponding rights are granted. It is wrong for government to require duties of their citizens without giving them rights, it is also wrong for citizens to ask for rights without fulfilling their duties.

To conclude, it is the argument of this essay that it is not a duty for us to engage in charity, since the general definition of duty and charity are mutually exclusive. If charity is our duty, what is the difference between charity and taxation paid by the riches to help the poor?

有太深或太淺嗎? I hope the answer is not too philosophical.

請在上文的這個位置補上: in return 這2個字.Duties can only be defined as duties, if corresponding rights are granted (in return).
