Machiavelli was a man who saw much. He lived through the Italian Wars. A series of conflicts in which France and Spain (other European powers fought too) on Italy's soil. He'd witnessed 20 years of invasions, alliances, betrayals, revolutions (like in Florence), gains and losses. It seems he was a practical man though. He wrote little about principle, morality and religion in a time when it was all imporant.
