Measure twice cut once means you've only got one shot at cutting the peice of wood, so be positive you have the right measurement otherwise you could end up with too short of a peice. When I was first learning woodwork my father pounded this into my head, and you always double check all of your measurements just to be safe. Hope that helps.

if you measure twice, you are more likely to get the correct measurement, so you need cut the wood only once.

this is the first half of a phrase. the second half is

" or measure once and cut twice."

meaning you can make a mistake if you measure only once, which will cause you to cut the wood the wrong size, so you will have to re-cut wood, which is wasteful and expensive.

The saying is just a specif way of saying be careful and don't waste wood, but it is true that measuring twice is a good idea.

The phrase is really just means to double check your measurement. See alot of Tape measures have Feet and inches, this can be confusing .So if it is read wrong you end up with a bad cut. Thus you have to cut again. But if you remeasure then the first cut will be good.

If you measure twice the likelyhood of getting it right is doubled so when you commit to cutting you are more likely to have got the correct measurement rather than stacking it and having two bits of firewood.

Measure two times to make absolutely sure your measurement is for sure correct. That way when you cut once you are sure that you didn't' make a mistake. Remember this rule forever, It is absolutely vital. GOOD LUCK!!

  • You measure twice to make absolutely sure that your measurement is correct because you only get the one chance to cut it :)
