Award show question?

Are award shows like the Oscars and MTV music awards, just big commericals for the movies and musicians that recieve these "awards." It just seems to me that they are just advertising for that particular movie or song.

    That is exactly what they are. It's just an opportunity for the film industry or music industry (or whichever) to stand around on TV and stroke each other.

    The Academy Awards, in particular, are supposed to award excellence in filmmaking but long ago let their politics dictate their voting.

    It's part of the reason that most people beyond college age can't stand watching them.
