What do they use to line a baseball field?

What is the white, chalky like stuff they use to line the first and third base lines in the infield?

It is indeed chalk that they walk in a straight line using a little lawn-mower looking thing. To walk in a straight line they use a little piece of string and walk down that.

That's chalk. They have a cart that dumps it and they walk in a stright line to make the foul lines.

They are caused by the way the grass is cut...you mow one way, it appears dark; mow the other way, light. It's done for decoration. They look cool.
