the first answer is correct, it's a pepperbox, made in the mid 1800s, fires all four at once normally, not very popular, few made, or practical, even though pretty cool in concept. the revlover was the standard by far. it was for very close range, like with in 20 feet or less, it was basically a very short barrel shotgun or scatter gun . one time deal, no time to reload. it is not a derringer, a derringer is a tiny concealable pistol, some had two barrels, but they where tiny calibre, and shot a "ball" shot, the pepper box shot a "ball" also but for a shot gun effect, the derringer was very small calibre rarely over a .22,and pretty useless if more than 4 feet away. give the first guy the 10 pts he got it in alot fewer words.

What era are you talking about? If it was roughly the Revolutionary War era, then the pistol was a percussion cap fired pistol with four separate barrels arranged horizontally, called a Pepper Box. If it was set in the last 20 to 25 years, then it was probably the C.O.P., which was chambered in .357 Magnum, IIRC.
