There are cheap insurance programs and there are good insurance programs but there are no cheap good insurance programs.

You'll have a problem getting covered while unemployed unless you are working. Most insurance companies will not accept unemployed people because they see you possibly getting a job with benefits. Your only other option would be a short term medical policy. These policies are designed to tie you over while you're between jobs. Visit a local independent agent to find a policy that's best for you.

Be very wary of medical discount cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of “save up to 80%” be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn’t find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. See this link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2006/11/... for more information. Many other states are starting to ban these cards as well.

Before signing up with any discount plan get a list of doctors. If they won’t give you a list consider it to be a scam. Call the doctors on the list to make sure they’re still taking the card (many don’t even know that they’re listed as a provider) and that they’re accepting new patients.

You should consider getting a short term medical health insurance plan. These are generally for people who are temporarily unemployed. These are 6 months long. An example would be United HealthCare.

Or if you want the 12 mo long health insurance, BlueCross is very cheap and good.

    Check out the website www.deliveringonthepromise.com/40545943

Watch the 5 minute video on the home page and qualify for a free $100 Rx card (no strings attached). Then view the "Save Money" option to see if they have a program that may work for you. Their plans start at $19.95/mo per household. It's not health insurance, it's discount health care. My husband and I go this route for our family of four because it's cheaper...

Medicaid or Medicare. After that, you pretty much get what you pay for. Family coverage costs $800 to $1200 a month.

Your local agent can help you get quotes - but unless you want to take on big deductibles, it's pretty much going to be $250 a month each if you're 25, $350 a month each if you're 35, etc.
