One really good way to find material might be to look at the career of Audra McDonald. She's played many traditionally african american and non traditinoal roles including 1 in 110 in the Shade where a caucasian man (John Cullum) played her father and they got Tony nominations! http://www.ibdb.com/person.asp?ID=52250

I don't personally think that a role has to be a specific race, but you can try these shows:

    The Color Purple

    A Raisin in the Sun

    Caroline or Change

    Dreamgirls

    Ragtime

    Once On This Island

    OO-BLA-DEE

    Crowns

    Harriet Tubman

    Anansi the Spider

    Harlem Knights

    Chicago

    Carter’s Way

    Africa’s Daughter

    Betrayal of Black Jesus

There are more, but I'm blank right now. Try searching the net.

    Look at works by:

    Ralph Ellison

    Ernest Gaines

    Langston Hughes

    Zora Neale Hurston

    Harper Lee

    Toni Morrison

    Alice Walker

    August Wilson

    Richard Wright

    Regina Taylor

I honestly think almost any role can be played by any race. Why not take a role that you like and make it yours? There are some roles that it really doesn't matter what race they are.

    good luck!

I think there is a book called Monologues for Actors of Color for Women.

Plays: Breath Boom, For Colored Girls who Considered Suicide When the Rainbow was not Enough,

Playwrights: August Wilson, Susan Lori Parks, Zora Neale Hurston, Kia Cortheron, Zora Neale Hurston,

August Wilson is a well-known African American playwright who wrote a series of plays. I've seen "Fences" and "Seven Guitars," and both are excellent.

Here is a list of his works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Wilson

Two musicals, "Crowns" by Regina Taylor, and "Five Guys Named Moe" also spring to mind. The former is mostly for women, the latter is an all-male cast.

Another musical, "Ragtime," has some major African-American characters.
