What does John 1:9 mean ?

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Is this referring to the fact that we were made in the image of God, or that Jesus gave us the true commandments before we were ever born into this world ?

What do you think ?

It is the preaching of the gospel.

Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

Source(s): Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

This is referring to the fact that Jesus was the light, or life of this world. By means of Jesus, all men would have the chance for salvation by believing in Jesus ransom sacrifice. So, to answer your question, none of the two statements you made are possible interpretations of this scripture, especially considering the surrounding context.

Source(s): John, the ENTIRE chapter, not just one verse I've construed to make mean something else.

In the bible most references to "the light" are either references to God or Christ. Both light the way to salvation. In essence, it's probably a reference to the spirit of God.

6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

John the Baptist was the man sent from God. The light was Jesus...John the Baptist said that Jesus was coming.
