Personally my favorites are the ZAP cars. The Xebra is the best EV on the market right now, and the Alias and ZAP-X should both be awesome cars available hopefully in 2009.

When I drove truck for a living I tried bio-diesel, but, the problem with it was that it lowered my mileage, and it has LOTS of problems in cold weather. The problem with electric, is that if you have a top end electric car, it takes about ten hours to charge it, then you only get about 250 miles on the charge (if you're lucky). So, any kind of mid to long distance trip would be out of the question. I know that this will probably generate thumbs down from people simply because I'm not singing the praises of "alternative" fuels, but I am speaking form my real world experience.

The Tesla Motors site is one. It looks like a neat car of you have a spare $100,000 laying around.

The Kurrent is a new electric car; it costs only 2 cents per mile to operate. More information is here: http://www.ecojoes.com/this-car-costs-less-than-tw...
It's not street-legal in every state, though...
