    You either say "halb neun" (try to imagine it this way: there's one hour in which 8 becomes 9, and half of that hour is already gone) or "acht Uhr dreißig", which is eight thirty. The "Uhr" is important, drop it and it becomes telegram style.

    1.) halb neun

    2.) acht Uhr dreißig

    but this had been said before so just a small addition:

    in the Army it would be:

    null acht dreißig (in the morning) or zwanzig dreißig (evening)

    you would say halb neun as they say half an hour to instead of half past so where we would say half past 6 they would say halb sieben

    acht dreibig

    Das Aussprache ist unterschiedlich, aber versucht es irgendwie;

    The prononciation is different, but try it anyway...:)
