Most people have their mouse set up to perform actions on double-click. Single click normally just selects an item. Right click displays the editing and properties menu.

    Single left-click is required when:

1.You want to select a file / folder.

2.You want to open a link.

    Single right-click is required when:

1.You want a pop-up menu with most useful editing options to appear.

    Double left-click is required when:

1.You want to open a file / folder.

2.You want to select a single word in a paragraph.

    :)

The most likely thing, my friend, is that the microswitch is knackered. Sadly, unless you're handy with a soldering iron, and being able to unsolder components ... plus you have to have a spare microswitch ... the best thing to do would be to purchase a new mouse. Sorry.
