# Whats a Constant in a Science experiment?

There are three main types of variables in scientific investigations:

1) Independent variables - variables that change (intentionally) in order to see their effect on another variable.

2) Dependent variable - is measured quantitatively or qualitatively and is affected by the independent variables.

3) In order for the results to be valid, the dependent variable can only be affected by the independent variable, so somethings need to be kept CONSTANT. The things that need to be kept constant are called CONTROLLED VARIABLES. Even if controlled variables are affecting the dependent variable(s), which they usually do, keeping them constant will ensure that all trials of an investigation were equally impacted by the controlled variables, therefore allowing one to see the impact of an independent variable on the dependent variable.

All in all, a 'constant' in a science experiment should actually be called a 'controlled variable' and the description of such a variable is described in the third point. Hope this clarifies.

The constants are things that stay the same. The variable should be the only thing you are changing. Let's say your science experiment is: What item will fall faster from your table? The variable would be the item/object dropped from your table. While the constants would be: gravity, height of your table, etc.

It depends on your science experiment but you want to keep everything constant (the same) except for what you are testing. Good Luck.

A constant, is something that is "Constantly the same" in your science experiment.

Ex. The temperature of water (If this applied to your experiment)

-Air pressure

-pH levels

ect.

A constant is the part of the experiment that never changes and always stays the same.

the constant is the part of the experiment that never changes (stays the same) throughout the experiment. the variable is what changes (is experimented on).

example: if you were to experiment on plant growth, you would pot one plant with plain dirt (constant) and leave that one alone.

plant the other plants in different sized pots/different dirt/differently lighted areas. each different action to each of those plants from the original would be considered the variable.
