If it is a trick question and you are talking about football, the Steelers' roots in Pittsburgh date back to July 8, 1933 when they were founded under the name Pittsburgh Pirates by Arthur Joseph Rooney.

If you are talking about the baseball team, that is a little more difficult. In 1900, Barney Dreyfuss, owner of the defunct Louisville club, acquired controlling interest of the Pirates and brought 14 players with him, including future Hall of Famers Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke. That is the first mention that I could find about an owner of the baseball team, though they were founded in 1887 as the Pittsburgh Alleghanies, and they did not get the name Pirates until 1891, but no mention of an owner.

What Sport are you referring to. Pittsburgh Hockey, Baseball, and even Football teams were all the Pittsburgh pirates at one time. If you are referring to Football then it would be Art Rooney Sr. They were the Pirates from 1933 when the joined the NFL to 1940 when they changed to the Steelers. Not sure about the Hockeyor Baseball.
