Halo is a science fiction video game series created by Bungie Studios. The Halo trilogy centers around Master Chief Petty Officer SPARTAN-117, John, or simply "Master Chief", a human super-soldier equipped with technologically-advanced battle armor, and his Construct AI companion, Cortana, as the humans of a futuristic universe do battle against the alien Covenant. In this science fiction setting, the term "Halo" refers to the Halo megastructure, a large orbital construction, similar to those first popularized by the 1970 novel Ringworld by Larry Niven, though smaller in scale.
The video games, particularly Halo: Combat Evolved, have been praised as being the best, and most influential, first-person shooters on a game console, with Halo being the Microsoft Xbox's "killer app". This has led to the term "Halo killer" being used to describe console games that aspire to be better than Halo. Halo's sequel, Halo 2, shattered sales records for a media release, and Halo 3 is expected to outsell its predecessors.
Beginning with the release of Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001, the franchise has since expanded to several other games, five novels, several graphic novels, and numerous other licensed products, such as action figures. The cultural impact of the Halo series has been compared to that of the Star Wars franchise by Brian Bendis, with those who enjoy the series being dubbed the "Halo Nation".The final game in the original trilogy, Halo 3, is due to be released on 25th, 26th, 27th September 2007 Worldwide.
Halo: Combat Evolved is a Science Fiction first person shooter that takes place on a mysterious planet-like construct referred to as 'Halo'. It was the first Halo video game and was released as an exclusive Xbox title on November 15, 2001. Some time before the game's story begins, the Covenant, a collection of alien species committed to the destruction of the human race, launch an assault on the home of human military production, Reach, destroying it. A single starship, the Pillar of Autumn, survives the alien onslaught, carrying one of the last known SPARTAN-II supersoldiers - the "Master Chief". The ship initiates a random jump to Slipspace, hoping to lead the enemy away from Earth. Following coordinates chosen by the on board Al named Cortana, the Autumn unexpectedly discovers Halo. The player assumes the role of the Master Chief and descends to the ring's surface to fight the Covenant and discover Halo's secrets. Halo received critical acclaim upon its release, including being ranked the fourteenth best game ever by IGN. A PC port was developed by Gearbox Software and released on September 30, 2003. A Mac OS X version was released on December 11, 2003

Halo revolves around the character known as the Master Chief who was abducted from his home at the age of six to be a member of the spartan project for the UNSC(United Nations Space Command). The spartan project was created to produce the be soldiers ever, The spartan projects members were physically augmented along with years of extensive training. The spartans were created to deal with rebels but when the covenant came around in 2517, i think, the Spartans priority's shifted. The covenant's technology are far superior to the humans therefore making the spartans the first line of defense for the UNSC. In 2552 the Master Chief is aboard a ship called The Pillar Of Autumn when the Covenant attack Reach, A major UNSC military installation and the training ground for the Spartans. The other spartans are on the ground fighting. The ship enters slipspace, a faster than light way to travel, and exits at Halo. While on Halo the master chief learns that it was created by the Forerunners, an ancient race far superior to the Covenant, the covenant revere the forerunners as gods. And also that the Halos were created to contain the Flood, a parasitic race that devours flesh and basically turns humans and covenant alike into zombies. He also learns that the halos were also created as a last resort weapon if the flood was ever to get loose. But the problem lies in the fact that the halos don't kill the flood, it kills their food. Another problem is that the flood get set loose about halfway through the game. And yet another problem in Halo is that the Covenant are trying to activate Halo because they believe that if they do they will become gods like the Forerunners. So you play as the master chief and in the end destroy the halo. In halo 2 the covenant come to Earth and while playing as the master chief you fight them for a few levels and then you board a ship. The ship follows a covenant ship as it enters slipspace and you exit at another Halo. In Halo 2 you play as a Covenant elite called the Arbiter. The Arbiter is supposed to activate Halo but the arbiter learns of halos true purpose and an alliance, kind of, is formed between the master chief and the arbiter. But away from all of this there is a covenant civil war breaking out because the Prophet, the leadership race of the covenant have replaced the elites with the brutes. In the end of halo 2 the arbiter is deactivating the halo when he learns that there is a place where they all, there are 7 halos i believe, could be remotely activated, that scene ends and the next scene is the master chief aboard a forerunner ship headed for earth and the game ends. Many speculate that the object scene in the Halo 3 trailer is the Ark. There is alot more to the halo story such as who the other spartans are and the spartan 3's this is just a small amount of information about the halo universe.

They, are infact, not out to destroy the Earth with the rings. They are seeking to destroy humanity but in fact, they do not know the ring will do it. If you take note, the Great Journey is what they believe will occur when the ring is activated. The fact that it is a weapon is unknown to them. The ones who truly know the answers are the Heretics and the Monitors.
The ring is a holy artifact to the Covenant given to them by the Forerunners that they hold of high reguard. Humanity is trying to prevent them from firing the rings and in there mind that is the same thing as saying Humans can't worship in there own style and seek to destroy the ones who are trying to stop them.
Once the rings are fired all at once, all sentient life on nearly all planets expect that of Earth will be destroyed and on those of the shield planets.

Your right the covenant hate the humans and want them dead, they believe that the rings have to power to help them do that but what master chief finds out is that it would destroy the entire universe. As far as the covenant knowing the prophets were the only ones who really knew and the master chief and arbiter found out what their plans were in the game Halo 2 . I suggest playing all the games in order and reading their novels as they fill in all the gaps and really complete the story. The legendary edition that came out also has all the cinematic footage from halo 1 and 2 in the bonus disk in case you don't want to play the first two games.

It might just be that their homeworld is so far away that the halos will have no affect on it.
