What is the correct pronounciation for bologna?

If you answered "bolonie", then why are the phonetics so disjointed? (Cf.: colonel, etc.)

The correct pronounciation is buh-loh-nee. The word Bologna came from the name of a city in Italy. That is why it is pronounced differently from how it is spelled. A lot of English words come from other languages. Colonel comes from a French word. When we borrow these words from other languages we usually keep the pronounciation and spelling the same eventhough it is different from English.

English and its parameters can be confusing at best. The word is pronounced as bo-lone-ah, but baloney is better understood.

As for colonel: the pronounciation is as a kernel of corn. Perhaps its origins come from the early colonists.
