Phishing, in layman's term, is an act of forgery, fraud/deception that aims to extract valuable or confidential information from an individual through the following:

Email: an email is sent to your inbox apparently coming from a legitimate source or website, convincing you to do things such as but not limited to purchasing a product or service, verifying your login information, or just simply visiting a website. This will cause you to be led to the next step in this act of deceipt, the fake website.

Website: a clever imitation of a legitimate site (i.e., ebay.com, yahoo.com, etc.), usually financial institutions like banks & credit card companies, download centers and purchasing sites. It will allow you to login and enter information, specifically your username and password but instead of forwarding the information to your intended legitimate site, it goes to a database created by the 'phisher' and collected. You will probably then be logged in to the real site but your account has actually been compromised. In short, he can steal whatever money you have in a certain company or he can go on a shopping spree using your stolen identity.

Now, prevention is always better than cure. So what you need to do is to be cyber-smart. One of the things you can do is to check the security certificate of the site. This is located at the lower area of your browser and appears as a padlock. Double-click it and the certificate will appear. Read its content and check if it indeed came from the exact company you intended to visit. Also, you can check the authenticity of the web if it's verified by Verisign, Geotrust, TrustedSecure, Thawte Consulting, Comodo, etc. Additionally, Comodo Verification Engine is offered for free at their website I included below, so don't hesitate to install it if you feel this is useful.

In computing, phishing is a criminal activity using social engineering techniques. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. eBay and PayPal are two of the most targeted companies, and online banks are also common targets.

Phishing is when crooks send fraudulent emails that appear to be from legitimate companies. These emails try to scare people into giving away personal info so that the crooks can go on a shopping spree using the victim's good credit.

superb. The 'discretionary gratuity' is directly extra directly to the invoice, yet you could request to have it bumped off. I stay interior the united kingdom, and it is not any longer prevalent to depart information, yet some places will attempt this little trick. i do no longer concepts paying it if there's a extensive party individuals, yet while there are 4 or much less at our table, we can continuously ask to have it deducted.

I am thinking maybe you mean "Phishing" (pronounced like fishing) and it's a term for hackers who try to scam you out of your password and sensitive information like bank accounts and such. They will masquerade emails to look like "official" information and try to trick you into giving up confidential data that can allow them to gain access to your accounts or steal your identity.

it's a fake email or website asking you to put in your account name and password. be careful if you ever find one. always check the address bar at the top of the internet browser to make sure you are on the right website.
