While not all States require license Certifications, there are a few National Resources in order to obtain a professional interior design license. Be sure to check if your State requires a license and also refer to our list of Interior Design Certification Resources.

    1. Interior Design Educators Council, Inc. (IDEC)

    Founded in 1963.

The oldest of the certifying authorities within our Top 5.

IDEC has many flexible membership options, a strong annual conference offering, and an established history which makes it an excellent resource for an interior design professional organization.

    2. National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ)

    Founded 1972.

NCIDQ offers many different routes to gaining membership.

    3. International Interior Design Association (IIDA)

Founded in 1994 International Interior Design Association (IIDA) was founded as a result of a merger of the Institute of Business Designers (IBD); the International Society of Interior Designers (ISID); and the Council of Federal Interior Designers (CFID).

IIDA has a great online career center and is focused not only on the educational development of its members but their professional development as well.

    4. Certified Interior Decorators International (C.I.D)

    Founded in 1997.

With four levels of membership the C.I.D. has flexible options for students, professionals, as well as associates.

    5. ASID

Founded in 1975 with the consolidation of the American Institute of Designers and the National Society of Interior Designers.

ASID is an excellent organization and resource for interior designers. With over 40 Chapters, ASID provides many local outlets for membership which makes it less overwhelming and easier to build a strong network within a much larger organization. The ASID website also has excellent resources for students and those interested in planning their education within Interior Design.
