Headset help, Gears of War.?

While playing Gears of War, 1vs.1 on LIVE, I can't talk to or hear the other person during game play, I can only communicate with him after a death. How can I change this?

u cant talk to him because he's not on your team

You can private chat with him while playing, you know how to private chat with him? here is how you do it in case (go to his gamertag select private chat wait till he comes and then press B and go back to playing while talking to your friend
