Where would the neutral safety switch be on a 1963 chevy impala ss?

Auto trans - Base of the steering column.
I probably should have been more specific. There are 4 wires going to the switch. 2 16 ga. purple wires are for the starter circuit. The two 18 ga. wires are for the backup lights.
Manual trans cars only had a switch for the backup lights.
Vehicles with automatic transmissions have had Neutral safety switches since the 50's. Check out www.NHTSA.gov
Go to this web site for a wiring schematic.

if it is a floor shift it should be under the console on the shifter bracket,if a column shift,it should be on the top of the steering column under the knee bulster.
