They have an internal clock. Dogs are creatures of habit and routine.

Dogs are creatures of habit, and they're also very observant. They get attuned to the daily rhythms of the people they live with and are comfortable when things happen according to what they are used to. If something seems wrong, they'll let you know.

Part of training is having a dog do the same thing over and over and over again ... until it becomes second nature to the dog. I think a dog's internal clock works the same way ... it gets used to having the same routine repeated day after day, and so, without even thinking, it anticipates or "knows" what should be happening at any given time. Anything that occurs at the same time every day is something they look forward to, because they like routine.

Dogs are amazing. When I was a kid growing up we had a little terrier mix. He was my alarm clock, only because my mom would open the bedroom door and he would come in and jump on my bed.

My mom said that he was under her feet all day long until about 3 in the afternoon. She said he then went into the living room and got up on the couch and looked out the window waiting for me to get home from school. I took him for a walk everyday when i got home. How he knew I'll never know.

It's instinct.. Like a squirrel knows to collect nuts for winter.. Dogs know what time it is.. It's built right into them to know what time of year it is, what time it is thru the day etc. They get used to your schedule and habits and that's why they know when to wake you up.. Sometimes their clock is a little goofy and they wake up up a little before the alarm will go off.. but that's just cause they know you so well and they know that you always end up running late and you need that extra time..

If you are talking about in the morning, there are usually a number of factors. One is the level of light coming in from outside. Dogs are very aware of seasonal changes. The second is your "morning wake up ritual". Although we are unaware of what we do as we start our wake up cycle, we do it on a fairly consistant basis. Our animals are very aware of their environments so once you start your personal wake up cycle, the dogs are all over that.

I observe this each and every morning with our 9 dogs.

yep habit and routine like another stated. The only one dog we cannot leave unattended in the home is our husky she has medical issues and doesn't like to be bothered by the other dogs. We always crate trained all of our dogs, but still we have hers up (like twice her size) but when my parents leave the home to like say take my father to work everyday, she kennels herself just like clock work, and we never started to ever even say anything to her, she loves her crate... But everyday she knows when they are leaving... It is funny how they no. Then my lab, (my shadow i should say) i normally work like 1-9 every night about 9:15 she is at the window waiting for me.. Lol animals will never stop fascinating me..

My 5 week old puppy wakes up every morning at 6:30, and I wonder the same thing. How do they know?

Dogs have very accurate senses and one of those senses is an internal clock. They like things to be routine and they remind you when it's time to do something. My dogs let me know precisely when it is dinner time. One of my dogs has a 'hungry howl' that she only does at 5:00 at dinner time, so we call it her hungry howl.

They don't know what "time" it is. They do SENSE rhythms or patterns that the family may have etc.etc.
