Exposition is the word you mean.
Exposition is what takes place in a story/novel BEFORE the main action of the work. The purpose of exposition is to provide you with a background in order to get you up to speed as you begin the story. The plot will come AFTER the exposition.
Usually the exposition is short except in a mystery, in which case the exposition is actually the purpose and aim of the mystery. In a who-dun-it, a detective will set about trying to uncover the exposition.
