Are you asking us to do your homework for you? How are you going to learn that way?
Think about it. Shadows. You already know what they are, don't you?
Highlights. Has the word "lights" in it, doesn't it? Figure it out yet?
Midtones. What does "mid" mean? Get it now? I think you can do this.

Shadows, midtones, and highlights are what is known as tonal information of the image itself, or the ratio of dark to light in the image. This information can be found in the histogram of the image. The histogram is a graphical representation of the light in the image and looks like a series of hills and valleys, the left side representing dark tones, the middle representing mid-tones, the right representing highlights.
Below is a link to a wiki page titled, image histogram. From this article you can link your way around some very general information on exposure range and image tonal information. For more in-depth examples I suggest you read up on the subject of photography.

Shadows are going to be the darkest part of the photograph. They will be black. Highlights are the lightest. They will be white. Midtones are grey. I'm speaking of this in terms of black and white photography, but in color photography and other mediums, it will be the same. Shadows=dark, Highlights=light, Midtones=middle.
