F.3 maths X1

1. A barrel contains 10 L wine, 6% of which is alcohol. If 2 L of wine is poured out and 2 L of water is added, what is the percentage of alcohol in the wine now?

    After 2 L wine is poured out,

    Volume of wine remained

    = 10 - 2

    = 8 L

    Volume of alcohol in 8 L of wine

    = 8 X 6%

    = 0.48 L

    Also, 2 L of water is added.

    So, total volume of the mixture

    = 8 + 2

    = 10 L

    Therefore, percentage of alcohol in the wine now

    = 0.48 / 10 X 100%

    = 4.8 %

    1) we should find out the volume of alcohol in 2L of wine

    the volume of alcohol in 2L = 10L x 6% ÷ 10/2 = 0.12L

    the original volume of alcohol in the wine

    = 10L x 6% = 0.6L

    The percentage of alcohol in the wine

    = [( 0.6L - 0.12L) ÷10L] X100%

    =4.8%

    so the percentage of alcohol in the wine is 4.8%.
