What actor in a movie best symbolizes the American Soldier?

I'm talking about the basic GI Joe - No Superhero types (like Rambo, Chuck Norris) - but just the everyday soldier. For me, its Robert Mitchum in The Longest Day, with John Wayne as Sgt. Stryker in Sands of Iwo Jima and Karl Malden as General Marshall in Patton right behind.

So who is your favorite?

Lee Marvin - Big Red One

Tom Hanks - Saving Private Ryan

Kevin Dillon - Platoon (just kidding)

    George C. Scott - Patton

Matthew Modine - Full Metal Jacket and Memphis Belle

No offense but John Wayne in Sands of Iwo Jima is a disgrace to those who actually served there (quoting my grandpa who actually fought there).

I would probably have to say either Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now or Robert Deniro in The Deer Hunter.Apocalypse Now is the all time greatest color war film, but Deniro is very bad *** in his role as Michael.
