Typically, steak and other beef is cooked according to the following:

    Rare -- really pink inside

Medium Rare - slightly less pink

Medium Well - very little pink, still juicy

Well - no pink, fully cooked

The more pink, the more tender usually. The cut of the steak also determines how tender it can be.

Well done is cooked the most. The meat can be tougher and drier. Medium rare is the least cooked of the three you listed, but rare would be the least cooked of all. Medium is in between. You run the risk of undercooking if you go too rare, which can cause you to get sick.

I prefer Medium or Medium Rare.

    Well done = almost burnt

medium rare= pink inside but not too bloody

rare = so bloody its still cool inside

medium= only a small layer of pink inside, not rare but still juicy.

Medium well= not pink but not over cooked

well done is all the way cooked, medium rare is just put the meat on just brown the top the inside is raw, and medium the meat is cooked just a little pink in the middle

rare is still very pink inside (great for filet), medium rare will still have a thin line of pink (not recommended for burgers) while well done is brown all the way thru

    well done = very cooked

medium = pale pink in the center

medium rare = pink almost red in the center (YUM)

rare = seared just on the outside, center juicy red almost still bloody

  • the difference is the amount of time the steak or meat is cooked. For example a medium rare steak wouldn't bee too juicy and too burnt.
