salmon jumping, but not in a river?

why do salmon jump in open waters. I live in Alaska and I am sitting here watching salmon jump out of the water. It is not a river, it is wide open water. So why do the jump? Are they like in training for the rivers?? I don't know , so please someone tell me. Thanks

The fish you see jumping may be jumping either to reach food sources out of the water or to remove parasites. These are the two main reasons for breaching in fish.
