If america is such a open minded free country, why?

why havent we had a female president yet? We have long told the world that we allow more freedoms etc, yet many countries have already had female presidents.

1974 Isabel martinez de Peron of Argentina

1982 Agatha Barbara of Malta

1986 Coraazon Aquino of the Philippines

1990 Violeta Chamorro of Nicaragua

1990 Mary Robinson of Ireland

1997 Mary McAleese of Ireland

1997 Janet Jagan of Guyana

1999 Vaira Vike-Freiberga of Latvia

1999 Mireya Moscoso of Panama

2000 Tarja Halonen of Finland

2001 Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of Philippines

2001 Megawati Sukarnoputri of Indonesia

2006 Michelle Bachelet of Chile

2007 Pratibha Patil of India

2007 Dalia Itzik of Israel

so, america, why have we fallen behind by over 30 years??

Update:

how is this a sexist question? This is a very relavant question, with a list of countries to show that we are behind. Did i put any sex down? No. Did i say a sex is better than another, no...its not sexist.

Honestly, it's because the United States of America is a Christian Fundamentalist government. In the Bible, the man is the head. A lot of people in this country were raised with those sexist ideals, and it gets passed down from generation to generation.

Don't believe me? Look at some of the debates that have been going on in Washington: stem cell research, abortion, gay rights/ marriage, etc. A lot of the opposition to those issues are based in people's religous beliefs.

Separation of church and state, my hairy ***.

This is a sexist question. While it's wonderful to be free, and freedom implies equal opportunity, such as male and female leaders, it does not require or put quotas on sexes for leaders, or anything actually. When a woman decides she wants to be president, she will run, and if she wins, then we'll have a female president. If we just selected a female president for the sake of it, that would be the opposite of freedom.

When one runs that isn't a socialist and has real American values America will vote for a woman president

We don't vote on basis of sex or color

We vote the person and a female hasn't run that is worth voting for

    You question is sexist

Why is it falling behind if a woman hasn't been elected

3 have run in the last 30 yrs and they weren't worth voting for

Maybe you should go live in a woman run country and then you would be happy

Maybe the right woman hasn't come along for the job. Maybe women haven't been interested in the Presidency. Maybe the citizens of the US haven't lived up to the ideals of the country and elected a female President.

I don't know. But I'm not going to elect a gay, minority, female President simply because it hasn't been done before.

Because no capable and worthy woman has run for president, yet, and it looks like the same holds true for 2008.

Many American men were openly admiring of Margaret Thatcher, and would gladly have voted for a woman of the same stature and capability as her. I thought Jean Kirkpatrick could have made a run, and I would have liked Condoleezza Rice to run, but she's busy right now.

You have to be voted in to win.

America is ripe with tradtion. Some of it is not always good. Just look at all the attention Obama and Clinton get for running, becuase one's black the other is female. It should nto matter in the year 2007 that a black man is running for president, or a woman is. But the news tweaks out.

Beyond the sexist men being closed minded we have yet to have a women run nor be qualified to run. Including Hilary, she is a shame just a puppet of her husband. When a powerful educated women steps up you will see what the wait is for.

Nope, just haven't had a woman who can woo the masses. Many of the women who you have listed left a less than desirable legacy.

LOL? Did you check how these countries still treat women compared to the USA? LOL!!! Alot of women don't go into politics. We have advanced in women's rights sooner than almost every single country.
