NO. It was The Warlocks. Panama Red was written by Peter Rowan and the New Riders Of The Purple Sage had a big hit with it on their late 1973 album Panama Red. Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart had played in the New Riders who opened for the Dead a lot in 69-71but were gone by this time. The song Panama Red was written by Peter Rowan with whom Jerry played in a short lived bluegrass band Old & In The Way(which also did Panama Red and lasted most of 1973) as well as Jerry playing on several records by both Peter Rowan and the Rowan Brothers.
