Trade in services predates the existence of the human race; is it often observed in primates. In a family group of monkeys or apes, individuals are much more likely to groom those who have groomed them in the past.

    A very long time ago.

People who lived in area A might have had plenty of walnuts, but not much in the way of copper. Area B might have had a lot of copper, but not much in the way of walnuts. A deal waiting to be born.

When Grog had more meat than Ugh, and Ugh had extra skins.

Source(s): Trade originated with the start of communication in prehistoric times. Trading was the main facility of prehistoric people, who bartered goods and services from each other when there was no such thing as the modern day currency. Peter Watson dates the history of long-distance commerce from circa 150,000 years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade
