Trade in services predates the existence of the human race; is it often observed in primates. In a family group of monkeys or apes, individuals are much more likely to groom those who have groomed them in the past.

A very long time ago.
People who lived in area A might have had plenty of walnuts, but not much in the way of copper. Area B might have had a lot of copper, but not much in the way of walnuts. A deal waiting to be born.
