What's a good family car? Good gas mileage and superior safety ratings a must!?

My husband has a 2007 Ford Focus...and I'm fine with that. I was just wondering if there was anything better out there? I'm going to be buying my own car soon and we are in the midst of trying to get pregnant. I've heard the Volkswagens are good...is this true? Thanks!

Clean cars (rated for both fuel economy and emissions), sorted by vehicle type (small car, station wagon, minivan, pickup, etc.): http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicle/

But if all you care about is fuel economy: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/

    For crash test rankings, see:

    http://www.safercar.gov/

    http://www.iihs.org/ratings

    http://www.euroncap.com/

But I'd also suggest checking out the April 2007 issue of Consumer Reports magazine (or get an online subscription) to review reliability and owner satisfaction. http://www.consumerreports.org/ As of late, the VWs haven't fared so well.

I'd of course suggest a Toyota Prius, but I don't know what your definition of "better than a Ford Focus" is compared to my definition! ;-)

Have you checked Consumer Reports website......I bought a Pontiac Grand Am based on them giving it good ratings and I have been very happy with it.

I guess it depends, as well, on how much you want to spend on a vehicle, whether you want to buy new or used, ect. As far as small cars go, the foreign models (toyota, honda, nissan) usually get higher ratings for reliability than the american made (chevy, ford). The exeption is the ford focus, which also gets high ratings. I bought my pontiac 3 yrs ago and they don't make that model anymore.

Good luck! be sure to do your research and be an informed consumer - both for quality and pricing.

The 08 Ford Taurus has gotten a 5 star rating for safety and is among the best out there. It is basically a Volvo. Take a look and see what you think about it. Good luck.

The build quality of the Golf is reassuring, it would be my hatchback choice.

As someone else said Volvo have about the best ratings of any car & then again lots of ppl have big 4x4's because they have a higher position for there occupants.

Any cars only as good as the driver so maybe a safe driving course is a good thing to consider to.
