hurt (verb) and painful (adj) have a similar (but not exactly the same) meaning.
e.g. you have a little cut on your finger. you'd say,
' It hurts! ' or ' It's painful! ' (好痛啊!)
but ' hurt ' can also be used in the following way:
somebody has just said something bad to you. you'd say,
' It hurts! ' (我很難受。) it means the thing that person has just said hurts your feelings.
under this circumstance, you can't say ' It's painful! '
