Help with United States v. Schwimmer?

"The principle of free thought is not free thought for those who agree with us but freedom for the thought we hate." What did Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes mean when he said that? Thanks.

If you grant freedom to one person to speak, you have to grant it also to the opposition. That is true freedom. Not just for one side to be heard, but all. Therefore, if we want freedom for ourselves, we also have to allow it for the opposing view.
