Manukyan -- queen of bordellos
By Nazlan Ertan / Turkish Daily News
Paris - "A self-declared feminist attached to the secular principles of Ataturk" was how the French daily Liberation described Matild Manukyan, in a full page devoted to Turkey's most famous "madam."
Manukyan, the eighty-three year old "queen of bordellos" and one-time top tax payer in Turkey, explained to the French dailythat she was a former student of Saint Benoit, a French lycee which, in her time, was run by Catholic nuns.
"For eight years I was the top tax payer in Turkey, but then the government changed the tax laws because it disturbed people to see that I was at the top of the list," she said.
Her walls are covered with framed letters from hospitals and universities thanking her for her donations. One prominent display is a portrait of her as a young woman.
In her youth she wrote "militant and fiery" poems for Ataturk, giving an example to Liberation: "With women's rights, you have given us freedom/Sleep peacefully, we are guarding it."
She also revealed that she had been a fashion designer in her youth, with a boutique called "Premiere" located near the Pera Palas. She opened her first "house" in 1962.
