I got this one!! Let me tell you...you're gonna love it! I serve it to everyone at my house, even the non-veggie people and they all love it. First thing is this...open the tofu package and drain out the water. Put a dish towel on the counter and set the tofu on the towel. Put another dish towel on top of the tofu. Then place two heavy books on the top of that so the excess water gets squeezed out of the tofu. (TRUST ME) Let it sit that way for a while...at least a half hour. After you're done with that, slice the tofu into nice thick slabs...maybe 3/4" thick. Put it into a pan and pour Italian dressing all over it. Turn the pieces around so they're all covered in the dressing. Let that marinate for at least a half hour. (I marinate veggies in this as well, it's delicious!) Grill as usual, just like anything else. It does stick to the grill, though, so have a spatula ready to scrape it off. It is soooo yummy! When we do it, I always grill extra to have on hand in the fridge, and I can't keep my hands off of it til it's all gone. :o) I hope you try this, and I hope you love it as much as we do!

Depending on the tofu and your grill, you might want to reconsider how you cook it.
If it is the soft white silken tofu, you might end up sticking tofu to the grill, and the tofu will break apart and become a horrible mess. Tofu readily absorbs flavors, too, so if you cook it on a charcoal grill, assume that it will taste a lot different than if you cooked it on a gas grill. I think that tofu will be better if you don't marinate it beforehand, and use a sauce or a dip for it. Fried tofu with a dip is usually a winner, like a soy sauce dip made with soy sauce, scallions, a little garlic and ginger, and a bit of pepper. Or, you can use a sweet soy sauce and sesame seed glaze on the fried tofu. There is also various panfried tofu recipes out there, using fried tofu and cooking it with vegetables a'la stir fry or using the panfried tofu as a protein replacement in dishes. And, you can always ask your friend how she likes her tofu.

Just a quick note: remember she might be sensitive about her tofu being grilled with meat...or meat residue.
Soya sauce, garlic, black pepper, seasame oil and seasame seeds.
Drain the water from the tofu, and cover with a tea towel. Place books onto of the tofu to help pull out extra water, this gives it a nice texture. Marrinate the tofu overnight if possible in the above ingredients, with some red peppers, egg plant, zuchinni etc.
Coat the tofu in more seasame seeds just before cooking for a crisp outter shell. Grill for 10 minutes or until the inside is pipping hot and the outside it crisp. The vegetables might take a little longer.

Tofu has no taste of its own so spices and marinades are very flexible, just remember to treat like fish on the grill or it will stick and flake apart like fish. Use oil and a hot grill. Next time try frozen tofu hamburger patties like Boca burgers they work more like a real hamburger and char grill up nice.
I personally like teriaki marinade.

I have a great recipe that I made up myself. I hope you bought firm or medium firm tofu. soft tofu won't hold up too well
1. Drain cut a few slits on the tofu pack and drain all the liquid its packed in.
2. freeze the tofu in it's original package overnight.
3. next day, take tofu out of package and microwave on one side for 5 minutes.
4. keep the tofu in a flat plate. Place the bottom of another flat plate on the top of the microwaved tofu so that it looks like a tofu sandwich and press the plates together so that the tofu is getting squashed and all the liquid should be draining from inside the tofu.
5.remove top plate. Turn tofu over and microwave for 3 to 4 minutes. repeat step 4.
For this recipe we are going to use a marinade that I came up with. I hope your friend likes garlic and onion.
1 table spoons of soy sauce.
juice of 1/2 to I whole lime
11/2 - 2 cups of water
3 to rings of onion 1/4 inch thick
1 clove of garlic
1 table spoon of chopped cilantro
in a bowl, mash up the onion and garlic until pasty.
add soy sauce lime juice and water. stir until fully combined add cilantro and stir. taste and adjust seasoning (soy sauce) to taste. adjust ingredients to taste. the flavors should not overpower each other. they should dance and compliment one another. its kind of hard to give measurements to this recipe because this is a "to taste" recipe. What ever taste right to you works!!
place tofu in the bowl with the marinade and cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Refrigerate for 4 hours. flip tofu over and Refrigerate over night.
cut tofu in slices 1/2 inch thick a oil your grill so tofu won't get stuck. keep the marinade you will baste the tofu once in a while so that it doesn't dry up. when tofu is firm and has some color on it, It is done. season with ground black pepper to taste. garnish with a sprig of cilantro and a thin slice of orange. Also some mexican fresh hot sauce goes well with this. Hope your friend likes this recipe. this marinade goes well with chicken and turkey. I don't eat meat but I have marinated chicken and turkey for my family and they loved it. good luck!! oh Make sure your grill is not too hot because the tofu will stick to it. Make sure its not too cold either. Good Luck!!

Season it with seasoned salt, pepper and Mrs. Dash on both sides.. Rub it in olive oil and toss it on the grill. Grill until you see grill marks. Turn 45 degrees. Grill until grill marks appear. Flip over. You should see cross hatch grill marks. Do same with the other side. Simple and tasty. Happy cooking!
