If you can read this text, then you are looking at a web page. A web page is part of a website. A website is like a book. It has different info on each page. This page is part of yahoo's website.

The first page of a website is like a table of contents of a book. From there, you can go to any place and read whatever you want. For example, the first page of this website is

If you take a thick book into your hand, the pages are numbered from 1 to 1000. But on a website, the pages are not numbered. They have different names and addresses. Usually big websites have a page called a "Site Map" which lists every single page of that website one by one and tells you what you can find on the pages. There are no page numbers. There's just a list of topics, and you can choose which one you want to read.

Books are kepts in libraries, so if you want to read a book, you have to go to the library and find the book you want to read. Websites are stored on hard drives in large, cold, air-conditioned rooms where there are lots of very fast computers working day and night. These computers are called "servers." They never turn these computers off. These computers are connected to the internet all the time. Your computer has a program called a "web browser" which can receive data from these servers, and turn the raw data into nice page which you can read.

The other difference between books and websites is that a book is usually written by one person and cannot be modified after it's published. Websites are often written by lots of people, and they can be updated anytime. For example, I am sitting in my bedroom writing this to you, and this text will stay on the internet forever. It will be part of yahoo's big book. ;-)

Websites are large collection of files which are stored on a central computer which is called a "server." A web page can contain text, pictures, sounds, or videos... All these things are stored in separate files. In order to be able to create a website, you would have to learn HTML and CSS first. Then, if you want to know more, you could learn Javascript and PHP. Later, you may want to take a course in graphics design and webdesign and learn video editing as well. It's one thing to know how to create a website; it's another thing to know how to create a nice, easy-to-use website. ;)

A web site is Page designed in code that browsers can understand eg html

for a web visitor to be able to view, the server where the page is should have a web server like apache to route requests from the outside world to port 80

Not sure what you are asking.. But a website can be very simple or very complex depending on the type of programming you use. Some code is server side code (ie PHP) and some code is exported to the browser (HTML)..

The broswer then renders the code, and so do it correctly and some don't (ie. Opera correctly, and IE incorrectly).

Eh? Basically a website is someones computer they setup and allow outside users to "browse" their wonderful GUI (graphical user interface) masterpiece.

Any computer can host a website, its nothing really but an interactive book for all to use.
