Question to writers?

How do you view your writing process and how does this help with writer's block? Does research help you write or does it hinder your process?

I view mine as putting together a puzzle. When I hit a writer's block, it's because a piece of that puzzle doesn't fit and I go back through and find where I went wrong. Research helps, but I have to be careful of when I do it. Too early and I forget, too late and it messes with my flow.

So, what are your answers?

I prefer an outline, so I don't have to deal with writer's block. I just move on to the next portion and go back and fix any holes as things come to me. It works much better than staring at my screen or putting my writing away for weeks at a time.

Sounds like you have a technical training background, or nuts and bolts creativity. I usually have a hand written story after doing research, then organize the chapters. When a snag hits I either bypass that section until I feel an answer emerges or re-read the written material to find a way. A story should not be too elaborate that the reader loses the story content but instead feels part of the story like it was their story.

  • When I write I just start by throwing my thoughts on paper. Then I organize later. Check out some of my writing at This is my online magazine. Research definetly helps alot. I also look at what other individuals have written on the subject. I like to do research when I am writing. Physically look at the book, internet source, whatever while writing.

I re-read the story and go back to the FIRST time I am displeased with how that 'scene' or moment went. Then I re-write it. I try to fit it back into the story and often I find a way to have this re-written 'scene' push the rest of the story along.

Sometimes, I just sit back and read an old favorite book, then something hits me and I start again.

Writer's block has been the killer of all my stories. I'm currently working on fixing that. So, until I fix the problem, I don't have much of a writing process.

well, baby you may be smarter than me , you know research and all, but i write from my own experiences. a little easier , in the way that you only have to research your own brain. but theres always a loophole , and that loophole is , if your gonna write about your experiences , you must go through some wild personal ****.

    good question

    happy writing

For certain books, I do some research, but for others, I go with the flow.
