Anne McCaffrey's books are excellent, aren't they? I can never decide with is my favourite :-)

I also like Robin McKinley "The Blue Sword" and Patricia McKillip - The Riddle-Master Trilogy. However I've had those books for a long time now so I'm not sure how easy they would be to get.

Have you read The Belgariad by David Eddings? It's a series of five books starting with Pawn of Prophecy. The characters are excellent.

    Enjoy your reading! :-)

well, I moved on to Katherine Kurtz (Deryni), Mercedes Lackey (Valdemar), Christopher Stasheff (Warlock), David Eddings (Belgariad), and Tamora Pierce (Tortall) after reading Dragonriders of Pern. I also went through most of McCaffrey's other books--Crystal Singer, Ship Who, Freedom, Pegasus/Tower series.

Anne McCaffrey has co-authored one of the Ship Who books with Lackey, so you can get a feel for her style--but read "The Ship Who Sang" 1st.

Most of those authors have written other series too; I just mentioned the most prominent or earliest ones.

One of my favourite Anne McCaffrey books is 'Restoree' about a woman from earth who wakes up on another planet populated by humans. It is less sophisticated than later stories and unfortunately is a stand alone so you never know what happened next.

I would suggest another of McCaffrey's short series, "The Ship Who Sang."

You might want to look into Piers Anthony's 'Xanth' series starting with, "A Spell For Chamelion."
