"VW has a great reliablity record."
ottomatic-You do realize a VW is a volkswagen.. right?
since 1999 vw has had the jetta, beetle, and golf on the least reliable car lists by the top 3 consumer watchdog corporations in the united states.
they are horribly unreliable vehicles. They use cheap parts which leads to thousands upon thousands in repair bills.
14 years ago, vw made good cars.. since 1999, to even mention a positive aspect of them being reliable is a joke.
Least reliable car 2006: VW jetta
Least reliable car 2005: VW Jetta
Least reliable car 2004: VW jetta
Least reliable car 2003: VW Cabrio/VW jetta
Least reliable car 2002: VW Golf/VW Jetta
Least reliable car 2001: VW Cabrio / VW Jetta
Least reliable car 1999: VW Jetta
you dont wind up on the least reliable car list if you make reliable cars.. thats common sense.
pros and cons
Great looking car
good gas mileage
its a volkswagen
it will be supported by volkswagen customer service (which many people rate as the worst in american mainstream autos)
overall mechanical quality 2.5 out of 5
very expensive parts.. everytime you take it in, expect to pay at least $1000 on repairs. (im not exaggerating, an ac compressor costs $750 to replace.. a honda civic-$125)
in conclusion, if you are a vw enthusiast, then none of the 'reliablity' issues should bother you. More then likely you will be ripping out everything that is stock to customize it... spending $10,000+ a year on a car for an enthusiast doesnt mean anything.
