Is it possible for someone to "pick themselves up by the bootstraps"?

Not literally, metaphorically. Can someone find motivation without any external prevocation?

absolutely...sometimes someone sinks to a new low, where the low thoughts or actions are enough to motivate them to change

I think sometimes when there is no external motivation that is a motivator in itself. The person will feel something is missing, and in a sense, use that as motivation to do something about it.
