Is there a specific method for harmonizing?

If the melody line sang C - E - G or some other 1 3 5, what would/could the harmony be? Any additonal details on how this works would be great.

Occasionally I can sing a harmony part to a song I like but I just can't systematize exactly what it is I'm doing to make it so. Thanks.

A somewhat standard and predictable harmony would be a 3rd above the melody following the key signature, or a 4th below.

Things can get a lot more elaborate than that, but maybe that will get you started.
