Spartan shield symbol? What was the meaning of the inverted V (the lambda) on the Spartan Shields?

The lamda is the first letter of the wider area that Sparta was a the center of. The full city state was called Λακεδαίμων (lacadaemonia is the common transliteration). Sparta was where the "real" citizens (that is, warriors) lived.

An inverted V and the upright version are symbols that date back to ancient times. Greek I believe. The inverted V stands for male and the upright V is for female as it represents a cup or chalice. The male version would represent power, strength and male dominance.
