I can see that most people can't understand what a president is (should be).

The president doesn't have the authority or the right to pardon or commute sentences. It's part of his responsibilities and should be held accountable for his decisions.

The idea was to allow the president to take action if a ruling of the court were outrageously wrong and yet legal. It's not easy to define exactly where and when to use it beforehand. If we were able to do so, we would be able to change the law and prevent it.

But everyone sees it as the right of the president to be compasive.

    IT'S WRONG!!!!

Not to mention the independence of powers. If you add this to the "executive orders" going beyond the limits established by law, the president is today the King of the country, the sum of all powers. He's able to judge, going over the judicial system, and legislate, going over the Congress.

Forget about Scooter Libby, it's a minor issue.

So far the sentence was commuted, he must pay the $250,000

fine and serve 2 years probation. My guess is that he will

receive a full pardon in January 2009.

EDIT: on wingshooters answer, Clinton pardoned his half

brother whom, Hillarys brother and one of the members

on his staff that worked for the Rose Law firm.

One of the other responders said that this (Bush commutation) was one criminal helping another, I would say that Bills pardons are exactly the same thing.

EDIT: Note to Amanda K No Libby did not leak the name

of a CIA operative that was killed, the woman whose name

that was leaked was forced to leave the CIA because of

the leak and it could have led to her death.

By all accounts, the case against Libby was weak at best. The President has complete authority to commute the sentence or even pardon him. Remember Clinton pardoned hundreds including many of his friends before leaving office.

Amanda K & Lisa E - no one was killed. The CIA operative was not even in the field but doing desk duty at the time.

I remember Scooters Wife the day he got convicted...She yelled out "We're going to F- Em!!!!" The powers that be were not going to let that happen. The Bush Gang like the Nixon Gang has always been loyal.

This is absolutely pathetic. Sounds like our governor in KY. He pardoned a dozen that were indicted not only from the crimes they had committed, but also 'any future crimes they might commit.' Oh, they were on his staff of course, just like Libby.

The President is using his constitutional powers and the Democrats cannot handle it.

I would not have pardoned Libby, but the President has the right to pardon anyone including Osama Bin Laden.

Just proves one more thing, if you're rich, famous or in politics, you are not subject to abide by our laws, and can laterally get away with murder.

All that money for the trial, and what good did it do, nothing.

This is just another example of one criminal doing all he can to protect another. Bush and company have to protect Libby, he knows too much for them to allow any real harm to come to him.

    The pardon will come later

I think that Scotter Libby should rot in jail. He leaked information that resulted in the death of a CIA operative. I personally think that what he got was not enough.
