Is Islam really peaceful?

Sura 8:12

"I am with you; so support those who believed. I will strike terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved. You may strike them above the necks, and you may strike even every finger."

Sura (2:216) - Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not.

Sura (3:151) - Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority.

9:5 Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the non-believers wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush.

Surah II: 98 – “Allah is the enemy of the unbelievers.”

Surah II: 191-193 – “Kill them [unbelievers] wherever you find them….Fight with them until there is no persecution, and religion should be only for Allah.”

Surah II: 216 – “Fighting is enjoined on you, and it is an object of dislike to you; and it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing while it is evil for you, and Allah knows, while you do not know.”

Surah III: 19 – “Surely the true religion with Allah is Islam…and whoever disbelieves in the communications of Allah then surely Allah is quick in reckoning.”

Surah IV: 104 – “Be not weak in pursuit of the enemy.”

Surah V: 51 – “O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whosoever among you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.”

Surah VIII: 12 – “I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.”

Surah VIII: 15-17 – “O you who believe! When you meet those who disbelieve marching for war, turn not your backs to them. Whoever shall turn his back to them on that day – unless he turn aside for the sake of fighting or withdraws to a company – then he, indeed, becomes deserving of Allah’s wrath, and his abode is hell… So you did not slay them, but it was Allah who slew them…that He might confer upon the believers a good gift from Himself; surely Allah is Hearing, Knowing.”

Surah IX: 29 – “Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth… until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.”

Surah IX:33 – “[Allah] it is who sent His Apostle with guidance and the religion of truth, that He might cause it to prevail over all religions, though polytheists may be averse.”

(I assume you don't mean to offend anyone in here) You're quoting these verses outta the context . These chapters were revelaed to muhammad at the time he was in the city of Medina since their homes n city had been sacked by unbelievers (in the city of Mecca) n they had to leave the city . Otherwise they weren't allowed to fight anyone in any condition . Look at the verses which were revealed to muhammad during thirteen years when he was in the holy city of Mecca .

Now tell me would you hug anyone who has invaded your city n has killed your friends n your family ? what would you really do ? you know US goverment destroyed 2 countries after the disaster of 9/11 . I think US is not an islamic country . is it ?

These are the ones you should have posted (If you're really looking for right ones):

    (3:20) (6:108) (9:6) (11:115) (15:85) (18:29) (23:96) (25:63) (41:34) (43:83) (60:7) (73:10) (109:1-6) ...

after readin' these verses you'd certainly know how peacful Islam is . BTW If you're christian have look at the book of "Deuteronomy" . god bless you .

You must understand that the Qurran is a very powerful and very elegant piece of work. It cannot be accurately understood if you take it out of context. In order to gain some insight you have to read the exegeisis. But, most of these come from the time when the Muslims were being persecuted to such an extent without resistance. This is talking about fighting back.

Sura (2:216) - Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."

During the early days of Islam, the Muslims were persecuted by the disbelievers to an incredible extent. Torture, murders, and a 'lets-beat-up-that-guy' attitude were commonplace. The Prophet never wanted to fight, hence the verses commanding him to defend themselves.

Surah II: 191-193 – “Kill them [unbelievers] wherever you find them….Fight with them until there is no persecution, and religion should be only for Allah.”

Again, until there is no persecution. Muslims are on the defensive in these lines.

And finally, Islam is a religion of peace. Like this verse mentions:

Surah II: 216 – “Fighting is enjoined on you, and it is an object of dislike to you; and it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing while it is evil for you, and Allah knows, while you do not know.”

Even though you dislike it [i.e the bloodshed etc.]- defend yourself. That is what it is saying.

You can't cut out verses like this , this can not show the meaning of the whole contest . If you read carefully all the sura , you will understand that this is only for people fightinh against us and not other people who are peaceful with us .

History verifies that , many non muslims along history lived and still live with muslims very peacefully , Today I was outdoors with a christian friend ( i am a muslim ) We were all muslims unlike her but we were laughing together , having fun and taking photos and every thing . the prophet had a christian wife .

In other verses ( I can't translate them into English exactly but I can tell you there meaning ) , God tells us that we should be peaceful towards others and stop fighting whenever they declare they they are not fighting us any more as God soesn't like the assaulters.

So please put everything in its place and don't cut the meaning like this

I recommend putting Islam and Christianity in the same religious context.... instead of pitting them against one another. Even the Christian God threatens damnation, His wrath, etc on the unbelievers of the world. One quote at the beginning of the Qur'an actually gives credence to the Bible and its events as the precursor to Islam. Corruption may have made some extremist Islamics violent... but the same can be said of Christianity throughout history. I find it offensive, actually, that us Americans can be so bigoted... particularly the Christians of our society that interpret perfectly good Quran quotes as "evil" simply because some pronouns are different. If you want to see differences, you will. If you want to see similarities, you will. With the right spiritualistic or interpretative frame of mind you will see that the two religions are actually pretty identical. Fighting the apparent "untruth" of Islam is like fighting the apparent contradictions between the Old and New Testaments. If the Islamics have it all wrong than so do the Christians... we should all be looking to Judaism.

    So?

You know, these are not the parts of the Quran that I find most troubling. What I find most troubling about the Quran is the self included process of abrogation. That is where later suras cancel out earlier suras. It is like Allah had to in later suras say

"my bad" got that one wrong, here's what I meant to say.

Here is an excerpt from an article:

If the Quran is indeed the repository of divine truth, then we should expect to find it, above all else, consistent with itself, should we not? We certainly should. But do we? No, we do not. In fact, we find, upon careful study, not only much discrepancy in the Quran, but a tacit admission of that fact by its efforts to explain away the existence of such. For example:

“When We substitute one revelation for another [verse, sign, Rodwell]—and God knows best what He reveals (in stages),—they say, ‘Thou art but a forger’: But most of them understand not.” (An explanatory footnote in Rodwell’s version states: “The Muslims admit that there are 225 verses cancelled by later ones.”) And again: “None of Our revelations do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but We substitute something better or similar: Knowest thou not that God hath power over all things?”—Sura 2:106; 16:101, Ali.

But why should Allah find it necessary to change, substitute, cancel, annul or abrogate any revelations or verses? Does not that provide a strong argument against divine authorship? Did Moses, Christ Jesus, the apostle Paul, or any other servant used by Jehovah God to give us divine truth find it necessary to resort to cancellation or abrogation? Would not such be an indication of defective power? And is there not a tacit admission that the Quran contains at least some contradictions in the following: “Do they not consider the Qur-an (with care)? Had it been from other than God, they would surely have found therein much discrepancy.”—Sura 4:82, Ali.

It hurts me to see so many phrases are taken out of context, I recommend you to read the surahs in full and in full knowledge of where, why and when the ayats were revealed.

Put out the negative reports you read in the media and try judging it with your own mind, I hope you will understand some day.

    God bless
