How can I create a feathered hole in a photoshop canvas?

I have a white canvas in front of me, a new document. I would like to make a feathered hole in it, so that something in another layer beneath it will be able to show through.

I can make a hole, but it's not feathered, it's just a clean-cut hole.

i'd appreciate the help, thanks

When you select the area (lets say with a Marque Tool) right click inside the area and then click on Feather. It will ask you to indicate feather radius in pixels. The larger the number of pixels you put in there, the more "feathered" your whole will be.

Then right click again and choose Layer via cut.
